The MSAH deals with preventing, monitoring and researching the harm caused by gambling addiction. The National Institute for Health and Welfare analyses gambling behaviour and harm, monitors social regulation of gambling, prevents problems related to gambling and is responsible for developing treatment arrangements.
The MSAH's strategy stipulates that the aims of reducing gambling-related harm are to reduce gambling addiction, identify new forms of gambling dependency associated with new technology, improve treatment; place preventive measures to taking up gambling, reducing the accumulation of problems.
Efforts in Finland to reduce the harm caused by gambling are carried out by the main gaming organisations - the Finnish Slot Machine Association, Veikkaus and Fintoto.
In 2006 the MSAH set up a working group to coordinate the prevention and treatment of gambling-induced problems, which prepared measures to prevent problems associated with gambling and to organize treatment.
