Primary health care

In Finland primary health care is provided by municipal health centres. Municipalities may have their own health centres, or health centres may serve several municipalities. Municipalities may also procure health centre services from private service providers.

Health guidance

Health guidance and disease prevention in Finland involve health education and instruction, contraception, maternity and child health clinics and general physical examinations.

Municipal health guidance is also targeted for example concerning

  • cardiovascular diseases
  • diabetes
  • obesity
  • quitting smoking 

Health sector non-governmental organisations and other bodies play an important role in producing and disseminating health information.

Medical care

Medical care in Finland is provided by local health centres, occupational health care and private doctors.

Ambulance and  emergency care services

The 112 emergency number is used in Finland for calling ambulances. Ambulance services and the first aid they provide are part of the health care system. In 2007 the ministry issued proposals for the reform of ambulance and emergency care services.

Oral health

Oral health care is arranged in Finland by health centres for the entire population. It is free for people under 18 and for military veterans. 

Private dental treatment is partially reimbursed by health insurance.

School health care


Student health care

School pupils in Finland receive comprehensive health care and health guidance from school health care.

Students at universities, vocational educational institutions, polytechnics and upper secondary schools are guaranteed health care to support their physical, mental and social welfare and capacity to study.

Screening

Population screening is used in Finland for the early detection of

  • breast cancer
  • cervical cancer
  • foetal chromosomal and growth defects

Mental health services

Mental health services in Finland aim to prevent, identify, treat and provide rehabilitation for people suffering from mental health problems and psychiatric illnesses.

Vaccinations

Children in Finland receive vaccinations with parental consent at child health clinics and school against severe diseases. The Finnish vaccination programme also includes the inoculation of people in risk groups.

Maternity and child health clinics

Maternity clinics handle the welfare of expectant parents, unborn and newborn infants.

Child health clinics monitor and support the physical, mental and social development and health of children under school age.
