Reconciling work and family life

The MSAH's family policy places an emphasis on the reconciliation of work and family life in order to improve the opportunities for parents to spend more time with their children and to make it easier for women to go to work.

The ministry's developmental work seeks ways of improving the reconciliation of work and family life, whereby

  • Legislation on working life takes more account of parenthood
  • Financial benefits are in place to enable families to select the best form of care for their children
  • Child day care services are reformed and diversified
  • There is greater equality between mothers and fathers in caring for their children.

In Finland, both parents have various options for taking leave to look after children.

Supporting fatherhood

Each year, the ministry awards a prize for Father of the Year, in support of fatherhood and to provide good fatherhood role models.
