Termination of pregnancy
Termination of pregnancy should be carried out as early as possible. Termination can be done up to the 12th week of pregnancy with the authorisation of a doctor. The National Authority for Medico Legal Affairs may authorize termination up to the 20th week of pregnancy if the client had not reached the age of 17 when she became pregnant, or for other special reasons.
Medical doctors may provide the authorisation for termination only if they receive permission to do so from the National Authority for Medico Legal Affairs. A termination usually requires a written opinion of the doctor referring the patient and the doctor performing the termination. Pregnancy termination for women under 17 and over 40, as well as for women who have already had four children, requires only the authorization of the doctor performing the termination.
Women seeking a termination should go to their local health centre, where a doctor will give the written authorization for the procedure. The doctor will also give advice and information about termination and getting an appointment at a hospital. Pregnancy terminations are carried out in hospitals.
If the foetus is severely deformed, termination may be carried out up to the 24th week of pregnancy.
